Stemming from my own fixation on trying to understand the actions, decisions and thought processes of those around me my work explores the difference between internal and external lives. I construct “brain spaces”; whether my own or someone else’s I strive to understand the decisions they have made and the stories we are a part of. I combine thoughts, feeling and sentiments which I have collected over my life to make objects that act as intermediaries, allowing others to imagine stepping into a mind other than their own. I attempt to bring the landscape of the mind into the physical plane, and to cross the impassable threshold between what is inside and outside of the psyche

A multi-level analysis of risky streets and neighbourhoods for dissident republican violence in belfast
This paper uses graph theoretical measures to analyse the relationship between street network usage, as well as other street-and area-level factors, and dissident Republican violence in Belfast. A multi-level statistical model is used. Specifically, we employ an observation-level random-effects (OLRE) Poisson regression and use variables at the street and area levels. Streetand area-level characteristics simultaneously influence where violent incidents occur. For every 10% change in the betweenness value of a street segment, the segment is expected to experience 1.32 times as many incidents. Police stations (IRR: 22.05), protestant churches (IRR: 6.19) and commercial premises (IRR: 1.44) on each street segment were also all found to significantly increase the expected number of attacks. At the small-area level, for every 10% change in the number of Catholic residents, the number of incidents is expected to be 4.45 times as many. The results indicate that along with other factors, the street network plays a role in shaping terrorist target selection. Streets that are more connected and more likely to be traversed will experience more incidents than those that are not. This has important practical implications for the policing of political violence in Northern Ireland generally and for shaping specific targeted interventions
Optimal strategies for a game on amenable semigroups
The semigroup game is a two-person zero-sum game defined on a semigroup S as
follows: Players 1 and 2 choose elements x and y in S, respectively, and player
1 receives a payoff f(xy) defined by a function f from S to [-1,1]. If the
semigroup is amenable in the sense of Day and von Neumann, one can extend the
set of classical strategies, namely countably additive probability measures on
S, to include some finitely additive measures in a natural way. This extended
game has a value and the players have optimal strategies. This theorem extends
previous results for the multiplication game on a compact group or on the
positive integers with a specific payoff. We also prove that the procedure of
extending the set of allowed strategies preserves classical solutions: if a
semigroup game has a classical solution, this solution solves also the extended

Charge Lattices and Consistency of 6D Supergravity
We extend the known consistency conditions on the low-energy theory of
six-dimensional N = 1 supergravity. We review some facts about the theory of
two-form gauge fields and conclude that the charge lattice Gamma for such a
theory has to be self-dual. The Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation conditions
in the supergravity theory determine a sublattice of Gamma. The condition that
this sublattice can be extended to a self-dual lattice Gamma leads to a strong

Global aspects of the space of 6D N = 1 supergravities
We perform a global analysis of the space of consistent 6D quantum gravity
theories with N = 1 supersymmetry, including models with multiple tensor
multiplets. We prove that for theories with fewer than T = 9 tensor multiplets,
a finite number of distinct gauge groups and matter content are possible. We
find infinite families of field combinations satisfying anomaly cancellation
and admitting physical gauge kinetic terms for T > 8. We find an integral
lattice associated with each apparently-consistent supergravity theory; this
lattice is determined by the form of the anomaly polynomial. For models which
can be realized in F-theory, this anomaly lattice is related to the
intersection form on the base of the F-theory elliptic fibration. The condition
that a supergravity model have an F-theory realization imposes constraints
which can be expressed in terms of this lattice. The analysis of models which
satisfy known low-energy consistency conditions and yet violate F-theory
constraints suggests possible novel constraints on low-energy supergravity

Influence of Anaesthesia on Mobilisation Following Hip Fracture Surgery : An Observational Study: 麻醉技術對髖部骨折病人術後活動能力的影響:一項觀察性研究
Background Anaesthetic technique can influence mortality and morbidity following hip fracture surgery. However, its influence on postoperative mobilisation is not clear. In this study, we evaluated the influence of anaesthetic technique on postoperative mobilisation. Methods In this prospective observational study, we included all consecutive patients who underwent surgery for hip fracture between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2013 at our institution. Any patients who died prior to mobilisation or who could not be followed up after surgery were excluded. Data was collected on demographics, clinical characteristics, anaesthesia technique and surgical factors, and date and time of admission, operation, first mobilisation and discharge. Results Of the 1040 patients included in the analysis, 264 received general anaesthesia only (Group GA), 322 received general anaesthesia with regional anaesthesia (Group GARA), and 454 received central neuraxial blockade anaesthesia with or without sedation (Group CNB). There was no significant difference in age (p = 0.56), sex (p = 0.23), number of comorbidities (p = 0.06), residential status (p = 0.18), time to surgery (p = 0.10) and length of hospital stay (p = 0.30) between the three groups. There was a statistically significant difference in ASA grade (p = 0.01), implant type used (p = 0.04), grade of operating surgeon (p = 0.02) and grade of anaesthetist during surgery (p = 0.004) among the three groups. Patients in Group GARA had a median time-to-first mobilisation of 23.8 hours after surgery, compared to 24.1 hours in Group GA and 24.3 hours in Group CNB. This difference was not statistically significant after controlling for confounding factors (p = 0.45). Conclusion Our results show that anaesthetic technique does not influence time-to-first mobilisation after hip fracture surgery
F-Theory and the Mordell-Weil Group of Elliptically-Fibered Calabi-Yau Threefolds
The Mordell-Weil group of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold X
contains information about the abelian sector of the six-dimensional theory
obtained by compactifying F-theory on X. After examining features of the
abelian anomaly coefficient matrix and U(1) charge quantization conditions of
general F-theory vacua, we study Calabi-Yau threefolds with Mordell-Weil
rank-one as a first step towards understanding the features of the Mordell-Weil
group of threefolds in more detail. In particular, we generate an interesting
class of F-theory models with U(1) gauge symmetry that have matter with both
charges 1 and 2. The anomaly equations --- which relate the Neron-Tate height
of a section to intersection numbers between the section and fibral rational
curves of the manifold --- serve as an important tool in our analysis.Comment: 29 pages + appendices, 5 figures; v2: minor correction
